Training: Introduction to Restorative Conferencing 8 Hours | In-Person | Certificate of Completion
Restorative conferences are at the heart of what we do at Regional Red Deer Restorative Justice. They create space for those who have been harmed and those who caused harm to come together, speak honestly, and build something meaningful — an agreement that repairs relationships rather than simply assigning punishment.
This full-day training introduces participants to the principles, structure, and skills behind effective restorative conferencing. Whether you are working toward becoming an RJ facilitator or you are a professional who wants to bring restorative approaches into your current role, this training gives you the foundation to do that well.
This training is a prerequisite for all Regional Red Deer Restorative Justice facilitators. It is also open to anyone who wants to understand and apply restorative conferencing within their own scope of practice.
What you will learn
Participants will leave with a working understanding of the foundations of restorative practice, including how harm, accountability, and the “with, not to” framework shape everything we do. The training covers the full conference structure from opening through to closing, how to interview and prepare participants, trauma-informed and youth-centered participation principles, and how to build strong restorative agreements. The day includes live practice and case-based application with structured debrief.
Who this training is for
This training is designed for aspiring RJ facilitators completing their prerequisites, as well as educators, school staff, social workers, counsellors, RCMP officers, community organization staff, and anyone working with youth or families who wants to bring restorative approaches into their practice. No prior restorative justice experience is required.
What to expect
Training runs for 8 hours with breaks and includes a mix of instruction, discussion, and hands-on practice. Participants will work through real case scenarios, practice interviewing techniques in small groups, and draft a restorative agreement from start to finish.
